The NAR Program is a Certified Nursing Assistant training program for New Americans.  This nationally recognized program offers a career path for new Americans interested in employment in the medical field.  Our students fill needed positions and contribute to the care of the elderly and ill in our society.

Goal of Position:  This position will assist NAR students in navigating the cultural norms and needs of job hunting in today’s market.  Candidate will also assist the job counselor with some of the administrative duties.

Sample Tasks:  Assisting the employment counselor with job hunting activities for nursing assistant graduates:

·        Practice job interviewing, helping with job applications, creating resumes

·        Researching and updating information on possible employers

·        Maintaining and updating databases of employers

·        Researching and helping to update the job skills information we use to train students

·        Take the students to employment sites to fill out applications and help coach them on what to do.

·        Help make follow-up and tracking calls of graduated students.

Additional duties may include:

·        Proctoring and correcting tests and entering scores

Qualifications sought: Experience working with a wide variety of cultures is an asset.  It is helpful for the candidate to be familiar with the US job hunting culture (filling out applications, resumes, interviewing skills.)

Training Required:  Available upon starting, but it is necessary for the candidate to be familiar with Word, Excel, web browsing and the US job hunting and workplace norms.

Benefits: This is a very practical way for an intern to help New Americans (immigrants) get on their feet and start to make a sustainable, self sufficient life here in the U.S. and can be a very rewarding experience.  The intern would gain experience working in a non-profit, resettlement agency.

Length of Commitment: Applicants must be able to commit for a minimum of 3-6 months.  Next available opportunity to start is August/September, 2011.

Estimated hours per week: Must be available for a minimum of 10-12 hours per week, available hours 9-5, for a 3-6 month commitment with the possibility of extension. Interns are recruited each term.
